What Inspires Me to Craft: A Story from the Heart

At the heart of Crafting Therapy Shop is more than just fabric, thread, and patterns—it’s people. What inspires me to craft is the moments when creativity meets compassion. One moment in particular changed the way I think about handmade products forever.
Several years ago, I was at a local craft fair, showcasing my handmade bowl cozies, cat toys, and other sewn goods. It was a typical day full of friendly chats, smiles, and the joy of sharing my work. Then a woman approached my booth—she was in a wheelchair and radiated warmth as she browsed my display. She asked me a simple question: “Do you make plate cozies?”
I paused for a moment. At that time, I didn’t. I was familiar with bowl cozies, which help protect hands from hot dishes right out of the microwave, but I hadn’t thought about adapting that concept to dinner plates.
She explained, “I eat all my meals in my wheelchair, and it’s hard to handle a hot plate comfortably without using a blanket. Something like this—just shaped for a plate—would make such a difference.”
That single conversation shifted my perspective. I saw, in real time, how handmade crafts could be more than beautiful or fun—they could be functional, inclusive, and life-enhancing.
That night, I went home and started sketching ideas. I wanted to create something that not only worked for her but could benefit anyone who needed a little extra support during mealtime. Soon after, plate cozies became a staple in my product line.
Each one is sewn with intention: to bring ease, comfort, and a little more dignity to daily routines. Whether someone is navigating life in a wheelchair, dealing with arthritis, or simply wants to protect their hands and lap, these cozies are a small way to make a big difference.
This experience reminded me why I started Crafting Therapy Shop in the first place. Crafting is more than a hobby or business—it’s a form of connection, a way to listen and respond, and a method of turning empathy into something tangible and helpful.
I continue to find inspiration from the stories, requests, and needs of my customers. Every interaction is a chance to learn how I can better serve others through handmade designs that are both heartfelt and practical.
Thank you for being part of my journey.
Joyfully yours,
— Rebecca
